Rare items are really hard to find, but have better powers and sell for 100% of their value. Uncommon items can only be found, so you can't just craft them, but they sell for 50% of their value. 5e differs slightly because it just has "magic item rarities", and the seemingly arbitrary division of tables between major and minor still seems to rely on this. Under the "Rarity" section on p135 of the DMG it says: The value of a consumable item, such as a potion or scroll, is typically half the value of a permanent item of the same rarity.Introduction. A very rare Bloodwell Vial grants a +3 bonus to spell saving throw DCs and attack rolls of Sorcerer spells. It’s also a spellcasting focus and can regain 5 sorcery points once every day. I believe that the rarity of magical items in 5e is a kneejerk reaction against the relative ubiquity of them in 3.0/3.5/PF (3.x). I generally think that this is a bad move.
